HLR Goodwood Circuit Photo Opportunity

Lotus 12 no. 353 at Goodwood circuit

Further to the announcement in the Spring 2024 edition of the HLR magazine, we can now bring you more details of this event.

Following a member’s suggestion in 2023 it was recognised that several historic Lotus owners wished to 'pose' their car on the famous Goodwood circuit and take some photos. With this in mind early enquiries of Goodwood circuit suggested that this would be most easily arranged during the lunch hour on a day that the circuit was being used for a track day event.

Subsequent research by the HLR identified that the long-established Club Lotus Surrey Area track day was being held on Saturday 27th April 2024. The Club Lotus organiser, Chris Parker and Goodwood were happy that such arrangements could be put in place.

With this in mind would any HLR member who wishes to participate in this arrangement next Saturday (27th April) please immediately contact Nigel Halliday, Chairman HLR, so they may be booked in. Currently no cost is likely to be involved. It should be borne in mind however that no driving or circulating around the circuit will be allowed, it will purely be an arrangement for you to pose your car on the circuit in order to take static photo shots whilst the circuit is shut during the lunch hour.

If there are enough HLR members present, there has been the suggestion that a run to the nearby Tangmere Aviation Museum may take place in the afternoon. Otherwise, an enjoyable day watching the Club Lotus track day cars and talking Lotus in the paddock will take place.

HLR Chairman Nigel Halliday will be present at Goodwood from approx 11 am to 3pm on the day. He looks forward to meeting any HLR members who wish to attend.

HLR Back to roots - Trials and off road experience day - POSTPONED

HEL46

Unfortunately it has been necessary to postpone the planned trials experience day. A new date for this event will be arranged.

We are firming up on the exact format of the day but it will include you all driving, under expert guidance, a proper purpose built sporting trials car. This is an experience not to be missed, it will give an insight into the type of sport Colin Chapman, Graham Hill, Stirling Moss and many other racing drivers took part in many years ago. The aim of the day is for you to have fun and enjoy yourselves doing something different.

If you decide you would rather drive a 4x4 Land Rover or one of the brilliant off-road buggies, again under expert guidance, that will be fine.

Note that all the vehicles you will drive will be supplied by the organisers, you won't be expected to drive your Lotus off-road!

The current plan is

Arrive from 9am - tea and coffee will be available in the meeting room.

Start activities at 10am.

From 10am to 1pm will be trials activities.

At 1pm we all move to our Vice Chairman Peter Horsman's home which is a very short distance from the activity centre. There is plenty of parking and Peter has kindly offered to arrange food and drink. Obviously depending on the weather either a BBQ outside or sandwiches etc. in his kitchen near the Aga. We will be able to socialise and see Peter's Lotus and other classic cars.

Depart for home when you are ready.

The cost will be £140 per person taking part in the trials activities. We would expect to make a contribution to Peter to cover the expenses of lunch but that can be sorted out on the day.

If you wish to take part in the trials activities please let either Martyn Halliday or Nigel Halliday know as soon as possible. We will then ask for a deposit.

We do hope to see you there. Any questions please drop Martyn Halliday a line or phone 07739 464170

Club Lotus Surrey - Goodwood Circuit Track Day - 27th April 2024

An informal HLR meeting at the Club Lotus Surrey Track Day at Goodwood Circuit, with the opportunity to have a static photo shoot on track during the lunch break.

Club Lotus - Castle Combe - 25th May 2024

As in previous years, Club Lotus have invited the HLR to attend their Track day at Castle Combe on Saturday 25th May 2024. It is free to attend, the HLR will have a display area to park in, and you can take part in a lunchtime parade lap.

If you wish to purchase a track driving package, you must be a member of Club Lotus, and this should be booked through them - Booking Form. This track day is for Lotus cars only.

Track driving packages are £110 – which guarantees two 15 minute sessions on the fast, smooth and flowing 1.85 mile circuit from when the track opens at 09.00. Once these sessions have been completed, there is an open pit lane (usually from around 14.00/14.30). You’re then able to go out again as many times as you like until the circuit closes at 17.00.

Classic Team Lotus Garden Party - 15th & 16th June 2024

CTL2024

One example of each of the first 12 Lotus car designs will be gathered together for the first time ever, at the Classic Team Lotus Garden Party at East Carleton Manor, Norwich on 15th and 16th June, 2024.

This historic variety of innovative car designs took Colin and Hazel Chapman on their extraordinary journey from the humble lock-up in North London to the glamour of the Monaco Grand Prix – and beyond - in just 10 years.

In another first, the unprecedented presentation of the early years of Lotus will be accompanied by the recent discovery of Stan Chapman’s personal film archive which provides never seen footage of the very earliest days, from the Mk II onwards. Garden Party guests will enjoy the first public viewing of this ‘buried treasure’.

The Chapman Family is looking forward to welcoming Garden Party guests to East Carleton Manor again, for this second celebration of Hazel & Colin Heritage. Many other Lotus racing and road cars will be exhibited throughout the grounds and gardens. The marquee on the Horseshoe Lawn will provide guests with seated hospitality and act as the focus for an entertaining programme of presentations, including appearances by invited guests. A variety of displays and activities throughout the beautiful venue will add to the occasion. Guests in their Lotus cars will benefit from preferred parking and a photo opportunity in the forecourt.

The Garden Party 2024 will be another splendid event at East Carleton Manor on the 15th & 16th June (the content will be the same on each of the two days).

Tickets are available from the Classic Team Lotus Garden Party web page.

Lotus Summer Gathering and Picnic - 30th June, 2024

Historic Lotus Register Summer Gathering car display/outdoor field picnic. A big open air Lotus owners Summer gathering, here in East Hertfordshire - large field, open countryside - sit in the sunshine by the lake. Free to attend designed for the true enthusiast, just bring your own deck chairs/picnic lunch or get something on sale here - Jane will be in charge of catering so you know it will be nice from midday to 5.00pm. Plenty of parking - trailer if you wish hopefully lots to look at and like minded folk to chat to. Come in a Lotus or something interesting. A voluntary donation to club funds on the day towards expenses would be gratefully received. We expect to have a small marquee and there will be toilets.

No doubt most of you are familiar with Stansted airport as a landmark so think 6 miles due West of that along the A120.

You may set up gazebos as sun/rain shades or as bring and buy tables for Lotus parts, books memorabilia etc to sell.

Please volunteer now if you would like to arrive early and act as marshals welcoming owners and shepherding them into chronological display order and model groupings - please let me know. Richard Hinton

Staffordshire Clubs for Young People Curborough Charity Day - 26th August 2024

Staffordshire Clubs for Young People are holding a charity day at Curborough Sprint Course on August Bank Holiday Monday.

Curborough Charity Day Poster, featuring the 'Spider' hillclimb special

Among the 100 cars and motorcycles entered, they hope to welcome back favorites, including the 5700cc orange “Catering Meats Special” 1970s Jersey hill climber Ford Capri, James Ibbotson’s super quick Hillman Imp, and David Hands’ magnificent 1925 Type 39 GP Bugatti. And of course “Spider”, featured on this year’s flyer, arguably the most famous Shelsley hill climb special, built by Basil Davenport in 1923.
